- Whether we hear a sound as music or noise is strongly influenced by the ratios of the sound’s frequencies discovered by the mathematician Pythagoras thousands of years ago.
- Note durations are expressed like fractions. A quarter note takes up ¼ of a whole measure in 4/4 time. An eighth note takes up ⅛ of a whole measure in the same time.
- Music is full of patterns, from short and long rhythmic patterns, to the way phrases combine to create song form, to the form of an entire symphony.
