Check out this fascinating summary of the impact of music in our social lives and health from Greater Good Magazine, entitle "Four Ways Music Strengthens Social Bonds." It's a few years old, but still relevant for ourselves and our kids. And if you're asking yourself, "How can I make more music with my kids?" check out this PBS article, "Create a Musical Home Environment," for simple steps to make your home and family more musical. Keep making music!

Be sure to give permission for media appearances if you would like to see photos and videos of your child's musical learning on the P.A. Shaw Music Page or elsewhere! The Time article, "Why You Should Enroll Your Kids in Piano Lessons, According to Science," describes a recent Chinese study comparing gains in students who received reading instruction vs. piano lessons. It shares that, "Children who took piano lessons were significantly better at distinguishing between spoken words that differed by only one consonant." So keep studying music to improve development!
Dear Families,
Check out these FREE Boston Parks summer events, including live music concerts and dance based fitness classes. They are great opportunities to get outside, enjoy some music, and get moving. I've created a map and calendar to help you keep track and make the most of these music and dance events. Hope to see you there! Have a great summer! Mrs. Kimani Dear Families, Do you love to sing? Is there a lullaby your mom used to sing to you? Are there songs that you remember singing with your siblings or grandparents as a kid? Would you be willing to share a video or audio recording of one of those songs? Better yet, would you come in to teach me or a small group of students how to sing these songs from your heritage? I am currently planning a music unit to coincide with 1st grade's Neighbor to Neighbor unit, which explores our neighborhood and community. My desire is to represent our diverse school community through traditional and popular songs from some of our many countries of origin. However, it can be difficult to find children's music in the usual places for some of the nationalities found at our school. In particular, I'm having difficulty finding songs from Haiti and Cape Verde. It would be a huge help if you would be willing to teach me or a small group of students what you know! Thank you and keep singing!
